Dishes, and Babies, and Starting a Business . . .

An “Owed” To My Dishes

Dishes dishes in the sink
when will the faeries
come to clean you?

Your pile gets higher
and wider and deep
and I can’t find a thing
that when I need to eat.

When will I learn to
pause from my work
and wash you up
clean as soon as I’m done?

Because, really those fairies
they aren’t coming

So, poor little dishes
the time has come
to fill up your tub
and give you a scrub.

dreamstimefree_561212I’m learning that starting your own business is like starting a family. Once that little one comes along you lose loads of sleep, you’re up walking the floors, and forcing sleep from your eyes both day and night. This new bundle is about all you can think about and you’re tending to his/her needs just about 24/7. Dishes, laundry, floors, and bathrooms suffer neglect. You get by on less $ in order to stay home and raise him/her. You go without because of the child’s needs, and at times you feel like sitting down and crying. And you do. But you get up and keep going because it’s up to you, you’re the one (hopefully you have a helpful husband) that’s got to push through and get everything done. And you do it all gladly, its just that at times it feels like time’s standing still and you can get emotional and you wonder if you’re any good at being a parent. But inch by inch the little one grows. You sleep more. Keep up with the dishes, laundry and floors. Order begins to be restored. And suddenly you’re able to fully enjoy the child, once an infant, now a zippy, zingy, sturdy 5 year old that’s on their way to their first day of school and all you can think as you stand there amazed and crying is, “Just look at her. Where did all that time go?”

I’m thankful for all the years of childbearing and rearing, it was the best preparer on this planet for starting my own business. Feel like I’ve been here before. The parallels are amazing. The biggest thing? I have the confidence to know, if I keep at it, it will mature and thrive. :)
