CONTINUED From Monday…

Around 6 my mother called. She had gone to her car to put something in it.  All I could think was, “How clever, how controlling, how typical.  No hope of speaking with my step-father, the one sick…”  But I didn’t bother to say that.  I wanted a peaceful call.  This wasn’t the time for me to be bringing up issues from the other day when dad was in the hospital and she had lied about the phone not being able to reach the bed and then how she hung up on me, much less the card she sent and had completely ignored everything from when I called/!BLAM!med them.  Had she mention anything then I would have discussed whatever she brought up, however she didn’t and I felt it best not to either.

During the call I felt her tying to use it to get something out of me, to try to give her a sign that she was getting away with everything up till that point.  I gave her very, very little.  This call not about her.

She told me that the tests showed he had a blood clot in his abdominal artery and they were likely going to do surgery the next day or possibly the day after.  They were putting him on blood thinners first.  She meted out this information like he had an ear infection.  So I said, “You do realize this is serious?”
Breezily she said, “Oh yes.  If it gets into his heart it’ll kill him.  That’s why they’re doing the surgery.  They’re going to review the tests this evening and let us know what they’re going to do.”
I put my hand to my face and dropped its weight into my hand wanting to moan out loud and asked, “Is dad still in pain?”
“Oh yes.”
“Are they putting him on pain medicine?”
“Well, the pain medicine really doesn’t help.”
“That can happen, however there are other ones that might, make sure they try something different he shouldn’t have to go through that pain.  I know that for me and my sons certain ones just don’t work but others do.”
“Ah ha,” she said, as if passing right over the information and continued to speak about other things.
I offered other information I had learned over the years, important things to watch for.  Her response was the same, “Ah ha,” and continued to talk.
She told me she would call when they doctors told them what they thought about the tests.
Hours passed.
No call.
I called the room around 9.
No answer.

More tomorrow,
Night, Love ya,
Theresa Jane
